Shucking

It may have been abnormally warm for a late October day in New York last Tuesday, but the oysters were perfectly chilled at Il Pesce restaurant of Eataly in New York City.

For our next oyster adventure, we decided to check out the Fish restaurant in Eataly. Eataly, a recent addition to the Flatirion district of NY, is a food lovers amusement park.  Not only does one have the option of dining at one of four full service restaurants, but also to purchase fresh produce to prepare at home. It is a mega space of all that is good about Italian dining.

With oysters on our mind, we strategically placed our selves at the bar of Il Pesce  Restaurant. Deciding to sample the intriguing options from the special board, we did not order any entres and instead focused solely on small plates.

We began with a dozen Beau Solei. This was no doubt an east coast oyster and embodied each and ever characteristic of one. There were no surprises. Each of the dozen oysters was simple, clean, and refreshing. As a Beau Solei oyster should be, they were small in a shallow shell. Overall a great start to a meal, but no fireworks. As for the shucking, we gave it a 17 out of 20.

Our oysters were followed by a crudo of scallops, grilled razor clams, and calamari salad. All superb.

The meal was accompanied by a very generous pour of simple white wine that went very well with our simple oyster.

Since Il Pesce changes their menu daily, we will be revisiting it in the very near future to see what oyster is awaiting us next. Stay tuned.
